Pace count calculator
No GPS? Navigators measure distance by counting paces. Calibrate yours, then use it here.
Calibrating your pace count
- Measure out 100 m on flat ground (a running track is easy: one straight is about 100 m).
- Walk it normally and count every time your left foot lands (one pace is two steps).
- Do it three times and take the average. Most adults count 60 to 70 paces per 100 m.
In the field
Your pace gets shorter uphill, downhill, in mud, snow, dense brush and with a heavy pack, and longer on smooth downhill tracks — so recount on different ground if you can. To keep count, move a pebble from one pocket to another or tie a knot in a cord every 100 m. Combine it with a compass bearing to navigate by "dead reckoning".
For planning and general information. In an emergency, follow the instructions of your local authorities and call your emergency number (911, 112, 999 or 000).
