How much daylight is left?
Out walking, fishing or setting up camp? See how long until sunset and until last light.
Sunset is not dark
After sunset there is still usable light for a while. Civil twilight lasts until the sun is 6° below the horizon: until then you can usually see the ground and do things outdoors without a torch. After it ends (last light), it gets dark quickly. Near the equator twilight lasts 20 to 25 minutes; at higher latitudes it is longer, and in summer in the far north it can last all night.
Plan for it
- Aim to finish a hike or reach camp an hour before sunset.
- In forests and deep valleys, it gets dark sooner than these times.
- Always carry a headlamp, even on short walks.
