- Taken straight from official lists, year by year (only the years each government has published): Singapore's Ministry of Manpower; GovHK; South Korea's Regulation on Public Holidays of Government Offices (law.go.kr, as amended 30 April 2026) with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute's calendar data; India's Department of Personnel and Training holiday orders for central government offices; Spain's Boletín Oficial del Estado (the yearly list of national and regional work holidays); Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) list of cantonal holidays; and Argentina's official holiday calendar (argentina.gob.ar). Japan follows the Cabinet Office's national holiday file, Denmark the public holidays named in Act no. 214 of 2023, and Finland the Nordic Council of Ministers' Info Norden guide.
Time zones
- City names, countries and time zones: GeoNames, licensed CC BY 4.0.
- Time zone and daylight saving rules: the IANA time zone database (public domain), release 2026e, compiled for ICU by the Unicode Consortium (Unicode licence). Live clocks use the copy built into your browser.
World calendars
- Persian, Islamic (Umm al-Qura), Hebrew, Chinese and Ethiopian dates are calculated with the Unicode ICU calendar rules (Unicode licence) built into your browser, and checked against official sources before they are shown.
- Chinese calendar: checked month by month from 1901 to 2100 against the Hong Kong Observatory's Gregorian–lunar calendar tables; where ICU differed (15 months, including Chinese New Year 2027 and 2030) we follow the Observatory. The Observatory's tables themselves are not reproduced.
- Persian calendar: checked against Iran's official rule for Nowruz, using the March equinox calculated with the formulas in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, for every year from 1925 to 2100.
- Ethiopian calendar: checked day by day from 1950 to 2100 against the calendar's own arithmetic rules. Japanese era and Thai Buddhist years: era start dates as proclaimed by the Government of Japan, and Buddhist Era = Gregorian + 543; both checked day by day against ICU and Microsoft .NET's calendars.
- Islamic calendar: the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, shown only for 1420–1450 AH, where two independent implementations agree; checked against Saudi Arabia's announced Ramadan and Eid dates for 2025 and 2026.
Sun, moon and Easter
- Sunrise, sunset and twilight: NOAA's solar position equations, based on Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (2nd ed., 1998). Moon phases: Meeus, chapter 49. Both checked against the US Naval Observatory (Astronomical Applications Department; public domain): sun times for 12 places on 6 dates, every moon phase from 2025 to 2030, and the moon's lit fraction on 72 days.
- Easter: the Gregorian (Meeus/Jones/Butcher) and Julian (Meeus) Easter tables, checked for every year from 1900 to 2200 against the date-easter package (MIT licence).
- Chinese zodiac: Chinese New Year from our Chinese calendar tables, checked against the Hong Kong Observatory (see World calendars).
- Equinoxes and solstices: Meeus, chapter 27; moonrise and moonset: Meeus's lunar theory (chapter 47) — both checked against the US Naval Observatory (all 24 seasons 2025–2030, and 131 moonrise and moonset times). Golden hour: the sun between 6° above and 4° below the horizon, from the same solar equations.
- Eclipses: Eclipse Predictions by Fred Espenak, NASA's GSFC (NASA Eclipse Web Site), shown in UTC.
Countries
- Capitals, continents, area, currency codes, calling codes, internet domains and neighbours: GeoNames country information, licensed CC BY 4.0. Currency names: the Unicode CLDR.
- Plug types, mains voltage and frequency: the International Electrotechnical Commission's World Plugs guide. The IEC retired the online guide in 2026; we use its last full copy, of 19 January 2026, kept by the Internet Archive.
- Driving side and emergency numbers: Wikipedia's Left- and right-hand traffic and List of emergency telephone numbers (CC BY-SA 4.0), each checked against Wikidata (CC0). A fact is shown only where both agree; where they differ it is left out.
- Calendar files (.ics) follow the iCalendar standard (RFC 5545); the holidays in them are the same checked lists as on our pages.
- Paper sizes: ISO 216 and ISO 269, and the North American ANSI/ASME sizes.
Conversions
- Ingredient weights: USDA FoodData Central, SR Legacy (April 2018), U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service — public domain (CC0). Each ingredient page links to its USDA entry.
- Unit factors are the exact legal definitions: the 1959 international yard and pound, NIST Handbook 44 (US customary units) and the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 (imperial units). Pressure, energy and power use the standard definitions in NIST Special Publication 811 (standard gravity, the thermochemical calorie, the International Table BTU, mechanical horsepower); data sizes use the SI and IEC prefixes.
