Coordinate converter: decimal, DMS and UTM
Paste a latitude and longitude in any common format — 43.6532, 43°39′11″N or 43 39 11.5 N — to convert it.
UTM to latitude and longitude
The formats
- Decimal degrees (43.6532, −79.3832): what phones and most apps use. South and west are negative.
- Degrees, minutes and seconds (43° 39′ 11.5″ N): a degree is 60 minutes and a minute is 60 seconds. One second of latitude is about 31 metres.
- UTM (17T 630084 E 4833439 N): divides the world into 60 zones, each 6° of longitude wide, and gives positions in metres east and north — easy to measure on a paper map. It covers 80° S to 84° N.
All three use the WGS 84 datum, as GPS does. Old paper maps may use a local datum (such as NAD27), which can shift positions by tens or even hundreds of metres.
For planning and general information. In an emergency, follow the instructions of your local authorities and call your emergency number (911, 112, 999 or 000).
